A GFCI outlet, or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter outlet, is a safety device designed to protect people from electric shock. It monitors the flow of electricity through the circuit and compares the current between the hot and neutral wires. If it detects a discrepancy (such as when electricity is flowing through an unintended path like water or a person), it quickly shuts off the power to prevent shock or electrocution. GFCI outlets are commonly installed in areas where electricity and water are in close proximity, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor areas.
